First: technique, not strength

Know how to swim "usefully"
You don't need perfect crawl for your first sprint triathlon. You need to be able to swim 750 m without panicking, at an easy pace, even if you alternate with a few seconds of breaststroke to reassure yourself and get your bearings. The goal: get out of the water fresh, not fast.
Getting comfortable with open water
Swimming in a lake or sea is completely different from the pool: no lane lines, reduced visibility, other swimmers. Train in real conditions before race day — see succeed in your transition to open water. Starting on the side or at the back of the wave reduces stress significantly.
Managing race day stress
Your heart races at the start (cold + adrenaline + crowds). Start calmly, breathe, find your rhythm in the first 100 meters. Panic almost always comes from starting too fast.
