Getting started in triathlon: where to begin

Updated on 2026-06-16

Triathlon looks intimidating, but it's one of the most accessible sports when you approach it the right way. Three disciplines, simple logic, and lots of fun ahead. Here's how to get started.

What distance to start with?

Begin with a short format, the most reassuring:

Olympic distance (1500/40/10), 70.3 and Ironman will come later, once you've built the foundation.

Minimum equipment

No need to buy everything: a swim shirt and goggles, a bike in good condition (even a hybrid bike to start) with a helmet, and a pair of running shoes. That's all you need to begin. You'll refine your equipment once you know you enjoy the sport.

Training in all 3 sports without overloading

You don't need 6 sessions a week. 3 to 4 sessions are enough at first, covering each discipline:

Most at easy endurance pace: this builds your engine without burning you out (80/20 principle).

The transition (the "4th discipline")

Going from bike to run gives you "jelly legs". Get used to it with bricks: do 10-15 minutes of running right after a bike session, once a week. Your legs will learn fast.

Race day: keep it simple

Scout the course and transition area the day before. Start the swim cautiously (nerves make people go out too fast), find your rhythm on the bike, and save some energy for the run. Your first triathlon goal: finish with a smile, not a time.
