Running 5 km in 25 minutes
Running 5 km in 25 minutes is a motivating and achievable goal: a short format where speed matters. A few weeks of targeted work is often enough to reach it.
Target pace: 5:00/km
5 km in 25 min = exactly 5 minutes per kilometre (12 km/h) to maintain over the entire distance. It's a brisk but steady effort, to be prepared through speed work.
Prerequisites
If you can already run 5 km without walking (see getting started with running), sub-25 is an excellent first time goal.
The sessions that make the difference
- Interval training short (VO2max): e.g. 8 ร 400 m at ~4:40/km, short recovery โ the core of the work (see VO2max).
- Specific pace: 2-3 ร 1000 m at 5:00/km to anchor the rhythm.
- The rest in easy endurance.
The volume
3 sessions/week, 20-30 km, over 6 to 8 weeks is enough for most people. On 5 km, speed matters more than high mileage.
Race day
Warm up well (it starts fast), then hold 5:00/km without going into overdrive. If all goes well, push hard on the last kilometre.
