Fundamental endurance
Fundamental endurance is the foundation of all endurance training. Yet it's what most amateur runners practice the least — at the cost of their progression.
What is it?
It's running (or cycling, swimming) at low intensity, where the effort is easy and you can hold a conversation. We often call it the « zone 2 ». This is where the aerobic engine is built: more capillaries, more mitochondria, a more efficient heart.
Why "slow" drives progress
Counter-intuitive but proven: elite athletes spend ~80% of their time at easy pace and only ~20% at intensity (the 80/20 polarization). Running "moderately hard" all the time creates fatigue without building the foundation — it's the #1 amateur mistake.
What intensity, concretely?
Simple markers: you can speak in complete sentences, breathing stays comfortable. In heart rate terms, this roughly corresponds to zones 1-2: calculate your zones here. Many runners need to slow down their easy runs to truly build fundamental endurance.
How much should you do?
The majority of your volume. Over 3-4 sessions per week, only 1 or 2 are « quality » (interval training, threshold); the rest is easy. It's this contrast between easy and hard that drives progress, not permanent mediocrity.
The benefits
- Better endurance and recovery.
- Lower injury and overtraining risk.
- A foundation that makes intense sessions more effective.
