Sleep and athletic performance

Why it's decisive
It's during deep sleep that the body repairs tissues, consolidates training adaptations and regulates hormones. Insufficient sleep causes performance to drop, increases the risk of injury and infection, and degrades recovery — a key factor in overtraining.
How much sleep?
For an endurance athlete who trains regularly, aim for 7 to 9 hours per night, and more during periods of heavy training load. Consistency (stable bedtime/wake time) matters as much as duration.
Sleep, a fitness indicator
Degraded sleep, declining HRV and rising resting heart rate are signals that the training load is too heavy. They should prompt you to ease off before fatigue sets in.
Sleep better: the basics
- Avoid very intense sessions late in the evening (they delay sleep onset).
- Limit screens and bright light before bedtime.
- Watch out for alcohol and very late meals, which fragment sleep.
- A cool, dark bedroom.
