Runner's knee pain: understand and resolve the issue

Updated on 2026-07-23

Knee pain is the classic runner's complaint. The most common pain on the outer side of the knee is iliotibial band syndrome (known as "IT band syndrome"): pain that appears after a few minutes of running, always in the same spot, and disappears at rest.

Why it happens

It's almost never a knee problem itself, but rather overload: too much volume too quickly, too many downhill runs, weak glutes and hip muscles, or an overly "heavy" running stride. The band then rubs against the outer condyle with each knee bend.

What works (and what doesn't)

How to return to running without setbacks

Once the pain settles down, the key is a very gradual return to running on flat, soft terrain, watching for any discomfort. This is exactly the logic of a successful return after injury.

When to see a professional

If pain persists for more than 2-3 weeks despite reduced load, or if it appears from the first steps, consult a sports physiotherapist or doctor. Don't let chronic pain develop.

Preventing it from happening again: manage your load

90% of running injuries come from progressing too fast. Sports Coach AI monitors your training load (CTL/ATL/TSB) and adapts volume to your actual recovery, so you can progress without falling back into pain.
